⚠️ He’s completely safe, and we’ve made changes to make sure this can’t happen again. By the time I found out he was gone, I already knew he was safe. My mom called and said, “Do a headcount.” I laughed and said, “Why? Is Declan there?” She said, “…Yes.” Five minutes earlier I’d yelled downstairs for breakfast, assumed he was playing with his siblings, and went back to getting ready for the day. Meanwhile, my three-year-old had decided that if Mom wasn’t taking him to Grandma’s house… he’d just go by himself. Half a mile. Across a 50 mph road. Before 8:00 a.m. on a Sunday. Looking back, I can only see God’s kindness all over this story. It was early enough that traffic was still light before church. My mom was home. Our cameras caught almost the entire adventure. And somehow, my brave little boy made it safely to Grandma’s front door. Afterward, I definitely had one of those “I’m the worst mom ever” moments. But so many friends reminded me that toddlers can disappear unbelievably fast. They also reminded me that this little guy only knew exactly where Grandma lived and how to get there safely, because we’d taught him. What a brave, courageous, adventurous boy I’m getting to raise. Motherhood has a way of humbling you. Sometimes it ends in tears. Sometimes it ends in laughter. And sometimes it ends with your three-year-old showing up at Grandma’s front door saying, “My mom is not here.” So if you’re carrying around mom guilt today, this is your reminder that we all have moments that shake us. Give yourself some grace. And maybe… just maybe… make sure your toddler is actually downstairs before you finish getting ready. ❤️
