There's a fun second layer to these archetypes: the weapons they wield. Raphael is the warrior full of anger but he has the smallest weapon, the sai, a defensive weapon. Leonardo is the leader having to be defensive but he has the swords, sharp and dangerous. Donatello is a thinker and a master of gadgets but he has the bo staff, literally just a stick. And Michelangelo is a wild party animal but he wields the nunchaku which requires focus and precision to use. Each one of them wields a weapon that is opposite. Raph wants the swords, Leo wants the sais, Mikey wants the bo, and Don wants the chucks. But instead they have to compensate for their strengths and weaknesses, face their shadows, learn to become integrated.

I grew up loving Raph. I was a loner. I was bullied. I was angry. As I got older, I became Donatello. I learned IT, building, hscking and troubleshooting. (still a bit of a rebel) When my child was born I became Leonardo. All the responsibility of their world feel on my shoulders. The one Turtle I was never able to become was Michelangelo.

Another cool aspect of the Ninja Turtles, which my teenage son & I were discussing last week, is the choice of weapon Mr.Splinter gives each turtle. For example, Mikey has nunchucks; their fast & fun, but also very complex, forcing Mikey to slow down & concentrate. Raphael has the Twin Sai; he is the most aggressive & has a defense, non-lethal weapon. It's fascinating.

Feel like you should've integrated Splinter into this. Because Splinter is wise, paternal, a teacher, he is firm with his children and teaches them discipline but also knows when to be nurturing, protective, and encouraging.

I genuinely love the questions you asked at the end & how you articulated archetypes, their shadow, & how people can begin to understand & balance these parts to become a more integrated person 🖤 I love archetypes, TMNT, & fictional characters that are representations of those symbols. I did a paper on this for my grad studies~ archetypes are symbolic figures that embody universal patterns of human experience, they’re inner guides & inform people & give significance to personal journeys. There’s many different types of them & can apply to anyone ✨
