Chiming in from a forensic anth standpoint, manual strangulation even just to the point of unconsciousness also takes so long that “heat of the moment” anger has passed and it is always a conscious, calculated decision to keep going. It’s calculated abuse.

And people often don’t know what strangulation actually does. Choking is where you can’t breathe. Most times (though not always) during strangulation, the reason we pass out is not because of lack of oxygen. It’s not because your airway is blocked. It’s because the blood vessels around your airway are being compressed and blood cannot reach your brain, which makes you pass out in seconds. Cutting off the air takes much longer and is much harder, because the airway is quite sturdy

I experienced non-fatal strangulation almost a week ago. had to move a state away in with family for safety. I said I was choked- but this. I wasn't choked, I was strangled.

Choking is the act that comes from strangulation at a intense level. Saying someone choked you is correct because choking happens rhen a person is strangled - learned this in med Science

in swedish it's strypa, and it's called strypsex. now that you're saying this i realise it really does feel more serious to talk about strypsex in swedish than english; language matters. i'll be saying strangulation instead of choking going forward
