This movie made me realize that the air nomads are the only nations to not have a non-bender leader. The earth king in Ba Sing Se, both water tribe chiefs, and later in the Legend of Korra there was also Zuko's daughter. For three nations that were founded under their bender elements you'd think there'd be a few succession laws in place to keep a bender on the thone. Am I crazy for wondering why that isn't a thing?

I believe it was the fact that Korra kept the portals open that allowed the airbenders to come back, because it allowed the spiritual energy to flow out of the spirit world to the physical world. If she closed the portals, the energy wouldn’t flow and the airbenders wouldn’t;t come back
