I nursed both of my children, I wanted to make it a full year. My milk supply started to dry up at six months. A midwife told me to start taking fenugreek. It worked to increase my milk supply, but everything about me started to smell like maple syrup! Sweat, urine, breastmilk, I just smelled like maple syrup. But fenugreek did work temporarily.

Back in the day. “Wet nurses” was never really a ‘noble’ act. The woman was usually a Slave or handmaid and forced to feed other peoples babies.

I breast-fed both of my children because grandma would always say the good Lord didn’t just put them there for decoration or for boys to play with……. They served a better purpose by feeding children.

My best friend decided to quit breastfeeding her baby and started her on formula. The baby was life flighted to a children’s hospital bc she was having an allergic reaction to the formula. My friend had to increase her milk supply, we had babies within a month of each other. I gave her my frozen milk so she could work on upping her milk supply knowing that the milk I gave her was literally life saving for her baby.

The more I learn the more I wonder if it used to be the norm for women to lactate longer. Giving milk to the young, weak, and sick in the community until maybe menopause. Maybe later?!

hahahah, and here i thought wet nursing (if that's what you call it nowadays) was 'normal'. i live in the middle of nowhere in the countryside of northern Sweden, and if we are at a family get together and everyone are healthy, and the baby gets crankyhangry when their mama is gone and another breastfeeding mama is there, they'll pop out the boob IF their babies are somewhat the same age.

this is true... my mum was unable to breastfeed me when I was like 2 weeks old... my aunt, who had a child the same time, breastfeed me, till mum got better... it's common to date in Africa, Kenya... this is 1991
