@adivunsolicited: They teach you slavery was a Southern thing. New York was one of the largest slave ports in the country and enslaved people literally built the wall Wall Street is named after. The same banks and insurers you use today (JPMorgan Chase, New York Life, Aetna, AIG) have admitted their predecessors profited directly off slavery. And a mile and a half from that wall, free Black New Yorkers built Weeksville one of the largest free Black communities in the country before the Civil War with their own schools, churches, newspaper, and votes. New York didn’t get left out of this history. It wrote itself out. #nyc #BlackHistory #broolyn #weeksville #wallstreet

Officially Opinionated :
I had it out with a racist professor at Staten Island Community College who tried to lie and say that NY didn't have slavery.

If you’re looking for evidence of slavery in the north visit Phillipsburg Manor and Van Cortlandt Manor in Tarrytown, NY (1 hour outside NYC). Both were active slave plantations in the 18th century.

Me, myself & vibes ✨ :
I take my 3rd grade students there every year as part of our social studies unit. As a NY native I’m disappointed that I didn’t know about this history until I became an educator. Thanks for sharing! ✨

If you live in New York or you visit, I suggest you take the walking tour in lower Manhattan cause they talk the slave trade. The tour ends at the African burial ground national Monument.

I’m weary. Many of us know this history. Now what are we going to do about it? What are we going to do about the current administration and political environment that is bringing back a Jim Crow era level of racism? Where is the coordinated action to effect change?

kings county had 30% of its population enslaved. NY passed an emancipation act in 1799 but FULL EMANCIPATION of slaves in kings county didn't take place until 1827.

I don’t think people understand that America was a. Country that had slaves everywhere before the country was divided between north and the south. It’s disturbing.
