Even if we compromise on good feeding practices while they’re babies just to make sure they’re well fed, we need to stop making those compromises around the age of two, or mealtimes will become even harder to manage as they grow! 1. Toddlers Eating Separately and Having Different Meals Regularly serving toddlers a separate menu can limit opportunities to explore family foods and learn by watching others eat. Eating at random times and in different places around the house can make mealtimes less structured, making it harder to establish a family meal routine as children grow! 2. Allowing Distractions During Mealtimes Phones and TV are a firm NO! Playful interaction can make meals enjoyable, but relying on games and toys to get toddlers to eat can shift their attention away from food. They may pay less attention to what and how much they’re eating! 3. Prioritizing Milk Over Solid Foods Filling up on milk can leave toddlers with less appetite for meals. Milk can still be part of a balanced diet in appropriate amounts and ways(recipes). My personal preference is to offer dairy through foods such as plain kefir, plain yogurt, or no-salt-added farmer cheese at snack time. 4. Poor Feeding Practices: Using Pressure or Rewards Repeatedly asking for “one more bite,” insisting on a clean plate, or promising dessert for eating can turn meals into a negotiation - and that pattern can become harder to change as children grow! Adults choose what and when to offer, while toddlers decide whether and how much to eat! 5. Uncontrolled Snacking Throughout the Day Constant grazing can leave toddlers with little appetite for main meals. Offer balanced snacks between meals, leaving a gap before the next meal so they don’t arrive at the table already full. 2-3 planned snacks can work well, depending on the child’s appetite, activity, and daily schedule! Important: This advice does not apply to children with special medical needs or when they’re sick! #mom #momlife #toddler #parents
