Originally written by John Marascalco and Robert Blackwell and first recorded by Little Richard in 1956, the song found new life when the Texas boy Buddy Holly put his own stamp on it. Rather than trying to out-shout the original, Holly leaned into the song with his trademark guitar work, unmistakable vocal phrasing, and the tight musicianship of the Crickets. It’s a great example of how the early pioneers of rock and roll were constantly inspiring one another, with the same songs taking on entirely new personalities from artist to artist.
