A continuous annual movement of over a million wildebeest, along with zebras, across Tanzania and Kenya in search of fresh grazing and water. It begins in the southern Serengeti (Ndutu area), where the calving season takes place and thousands of calves are born within a short period. From there, the herds move through the central Serengeti and into the western corridor, crossing areas like the Grumeti River. As the dry season progresses, the migration shifts north toward the Maasai Mara in Kenya. This stage includes the well known Mara River crossings, where large herds attempt to cross while facing strong currents and predators, especially crocodiles. After spending time in the Maasai Mara, the herds gradually move back south as rainfall patterns change and fresh grazing returns to the Serengeti plains, restarting the cycle. The movement is driven mainly by rainfall and grass availability, making it a repeating natural cycle rather than a one way journey.
