The Turpin Family Case At first, they looked like a normal family. Behind closed doors, it was one of the worst child abuse cases in modern U.S. history. David and Louise Turpin had 13 children, ranging in age from 2 to 29 years old. For years, many of the children were chained to beds with ropes and padlocks, sometimes for weeks or even months at a time. They were severely malnourished, rarely allowed to bathe, and often lived in filthy conditions. Some were reportedly only fed once a day and were punished for drinking water or washing their hands without permission. The abuse lasted for years until January 14, 2018, when 17-year-old Jordan Turpin escaped through a window with an old cellphone. She called 911, telling the dispatcher that she and her siblings were being abused and that some were chained inside the house. When deputies entered the home in Perris, California, they found what investigators described as shocking conditions. Several adult children looked like teenagers because of severe malnutrition. Some were still restrained to furniture. David and Louise Turpin were arrested and later pleaded guilty to 14 felony counts, including torture, child cruelty, false imprisonment, and abuse of dependent adults. In 2019, they were each sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years. Jordan’s escape ended years of abuse and saved all 13 siblings.
