my grade 9 EMS final exam paper was thrown away because my hair in its natural state looked like I didn't comb, so this is a very sensitive topic to me. This picture is from 2023 and I was doing my matric.

My high school didn’t allow us to wear pants without a jacket/blazer on cause apparently we are too distracting to the boys💀 they tried banning locs but didn’t win that fight (mind you this was a coloured school)

As a teacher, I’ve kept my hair in an Afro for this same reason. I am trying to raise awareness about our hair. I am hoping that one day, we will get to a point where we don’t have unreal hair expectations on the Black child.

The philosophy behind cutting hair at schools in Africa is very Good. Its mostly adopted in public schools where majority of the students are poor and unable to afford all basic needs. Maintaining hair in general becomes an additional expense to the already poor families but most importantly,kids are naturally careless and playful so keeeping their hair knit or clean all the time is almost impossible, therefore as an intervention, cutting of hair was introduced. This helped reduce hair maintainance expenses for families and improved students cleanness.

Saw a video here on TikTok a few days ago, where female learners were complaining that a female teacher told them their hair was distracting the male teachers and is making it difficult for them to teach🥲

white girls would have pink highlights in their hair but i got stopped from writing an exam and taken to the office for wearing a doek (that was still the school colours) because i couldn’t afford to do my hair that week and i was in boarding school. lol
