Director J.A. Bayona insisted on using real water whenever possible. The crew built massive 1:3 scale resort miniatures, destroyed them with a single giant wave in a huge tank in Spain, and combined those practical shots with digital effects. For the scenes where Tom Holland and Naomi Watts are swept away, they spent weeks inside a specially built water channel powered by 35 pumps, creating violent currents around them while hidden rigs kept the actors safe. The result is a sequence that still feels disturbingly real more than a decade later - because so much of what you’re seeing actually happened in front of the camera.
