Before the arrival of Aogiri Tree, he attempted to unite the ghouls of the ward after Rize Kamishiro referred to him as its leader. However, when Aogiri seized control of the 11th Ward, Banjou and his followers were forced to serve under Ayato Kirishima. Banjou originally admired Rize Kamishiro and repeatedly tried to support and protect her, although she never returned those feelings and often found him annoying. Even after Rize left the 11th Ward, he continued believing in the responsibility she had unintentionally left him. He first meets Ken Kaneki during the Aogiri Tree arc. After witnessing Kaneki's determination and later escaping Aogiri alongside him, Banjou chooses to abandon Aogiri Tree and follows Kaneki of his own free will. From that point onward, he becomes one of Kaneki's earliest companions and remains with him throughout many of the manga's major events. Unlike many ghouls in the series, Banjou dislikes violence and is aware that he is not an exceptional fighter. Instead of seeking power, he prefers protecting his companions and supporting those he trusts. He openly tells Kaneki that, even if he is not strong enough to fight on the front lines, he wants to become Kaneki's "shield." This promise becomes one of the defining aspects of his character. Banjou is almost always accompanied by his closest followers—Ichimi, Jiro, and Sante—who continue following him after leaving Aogiri. Together they support Kaneki's group during several operations. Following the destruction of Anteiku, Banjou remains one of the people closest to Kaneki and later joins Goat after Kaneki becomes the One-Eyed King. During Tokyo Ghoul:re, Banjou continues helping Kaneki and his allies. He also maintains a close relationship with Hinami Fueguchi, who looks up to him like an older brother. When Hinami is imprisoned in Cochlea, Banjou joins the mission to rescue her alongside Kaneki's allies. After the Dragon incident and the end of the conflict between humans and ghouls, Banjou survives and later becomes the leader of the 6th Ward.
