I always thought the joke about a dnd party being stuck by an unlocked door was a joke until a couple sessions ago my players stood there staring at a completely unlocked door for 45 minutes

Also, they actually only found two clues, but after they picked up a bunch of random stuff and just started making random assumptions, you kind of just rolled with it.

puzzle was to step on certain tiles in a specific order, players just put stuff on all of the tiles which idk I guess that works too the door opens

After giving us 3 riddles and then having to dip to attend to his child, he forgot to provide us the info that all the riddles have the same answer. After coming back 30 mins later and then gives us another riddle to "help", the entire table agreed that 2 out of 4 riddles did not fit that answer and 1 of them was a stretch. After discussing with him afterwards, I asked did he make those riddles, he said yes but the last one was AI (honestly apart from 1, which was the one that made the most sense, they all felt like AI). As obvious as it may be to the DM, if they dont explain it well it can really confuse PCs
