The Doomsday Clock is a metaphorical clock that shows how close the world is to a big, human-made disaster - global apocalypse. It isn’t a real clock that's meant to be taken literally but rather, "midnight" on this clock represents the end of the world. The closer the hands are to midnight, the more danger the experts think we are in. Who updates it? A group called the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists updates the clock, a group of scientists and other very smart people like Nobel Prizes winners. They meet every year to look at things like nuclear weapons, climate change, and new technology (like AI) to decide where the hands should be. Timeline: 1947: 7 minutes – The very first time the clock was set. 1949: 3 minutes – The Soviet Union tested their first atomic bomb. 1953: 2 minutes – The U.S. and Russia tested powerful hydrogen bombs. 1960: 7 minutes – Countries started talking more and being friendlier. 1963: 12 minutes – Leaders signed a treaty to stop testing nukes in the air. 1968: 7 minutes – More wars started, and more countries got nukes. 1969: 10 minutes – Many countries signed a deal to stop making nukes. 1972: 12 minutes – The U.S. and Russia made a deal to limit weapons. 1974: 9 minutes – India tested a nuke, and peace talks slowed down. 1980: 7 minutes – A war in Afghanistan made countries stop talking. 1981: 4 minutes – Tensions got very high between the U.S. and Russia. 1984: 3 minutes – The U.S. and Russia were arguing a lot more. 1988: 6 minutes – The U.S. and Russia agreed to destroy some missiles. 1990: 10 minutes – The Berlin Wall fell, and the Cold War was ending. 1991: 17 minutes – Safest Point: The Cold War ended! 1995: 14 minutes – People worried about old nukes being stolen. 1998: 9 minutes – India and Pakistan both tested nuclear weapons. 2002: 7 minutes – People worried about terrorists getting weapons. 2007: 5 minutes – Scientists added climate change as a big danger. 2010: 6 minutes – New agreements were made to protect the planet. 2012: 5 minutes – Not enough was being done about climate change. 2015: 3 minutes – Leaders were not working together on safety. 2017: 2.5 minutes – World leaders were making scary comments. 2018: 2 minutes – North Korea and other countries argued over nukes. 2020: 100 seconds – First time using seconds; threats felt very urgent. 2023: 90 seconds – The war in Ukraine made things much scarier. 2025: 89 seconds – Artificial Intelligence (AI) and climate risks grew. 2026: 85 seconds – Closest Ever: Nuclear treaties were failing. #interesting #news #doomsday #Science
