displacement of matter. burning fuel (weight) to push the aircraft forward in space. So essentially you lighten the mass of what you want to move. displacing the mass (fuel) allows it to move forward. Highly inefficient process and this is why we can't have nuclear powered spacecraft. Mass shedding doesn't happen with nuclear.
