When Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux designed Central Park in the late 1850s, they never intended to build a zoo. The park's headquarters was the Arsenal, a red-brick fortress on Fifth Avenue that still stands today and is actually older than the park itself. Then, in 1859, everything changed. A park messenger named Philip Holmes discovered a black bear cub tied to a tree outside the Arsenal. He cared for the cub, and once word spread, New Yorkers began dropping off their unwanted exotic animals. Soon, the Arsenal was home to monkeys, raccoons, porcupines, peacocks, swans, silver foxes, and even a baby alligator. Prominent figures joined in too. General George Custer reportedly donated a rattlesnake, while General William T. Sherman sent three African buffalo. By 1860, the growing collection had become an unofficial menagerie, and the public loved it. That's how the Central Park Zoo was born not through careful planning, but through an unexpected black bear cub. One of my favorite stories? In 1935, several monkeys escaped the zoo, and one reportedly wandered into Temple Emanu-El across the street before being returned home. Today, the zoo remains one of Central Park's most beloved attractions.
