The movie is great but the idea for a Generation Ship is much older, one of the first examples is Robert Heinlein's 1941 novel "Orphans in the Sky", which tells the story of the crew of a Generation Ship that has lost most of it's tech and doesn't even know that they live on a world ship. The book is fantastic and still holds up.
