i hate how translations don’t capture what people call each other—the translation will just be like “Hi, [name]” but I know they aren’t saying their name??

thoughts from a professional translator who also speaks fluent chinese - only the third one i would say is an example of something not being translated correctly and eve then its a case by case thing, the first two are nitpicks and your suggestions are too long and dont sound natural in english. when translating for subtitles especially you need to have the length of the subs fit within the length of the dialogue, which is why often things get cut short or left out

My current peeve is when the subtitle says “Are you okay?” And the response is to shake their head no. Obviously they’re asking a version of “are you hurt?” But the subtitles always get it wrong.

I’ve always wondered too. In Cdramas when someone is asked “are you okay?” They shake their head like they mean no. It makes me wonder if that is the right translation?

Thats why I love Viki and hate Netflix subtitles, even when you know the character is using honorifics the subtitle will translate to their names

Translation is more about what would a native speaker of the target language say, so yes, the nuance from the source language is missed because it doesn’t need to be there

The "I'm Sorry" translation, there's so many phrases in Chinese that do mean I'm sorry but there's so many level, usage, nuance in it that a simple I'm sorry couldn't justify.

wait i just understand it the right way while watching any language i feel like the mind picks it up because maybe english is kinda flat or different as a language? i thought everyone is like that?! i noticed in mandarin a lot of stuff can’t be translated with the same meaning/feeling also i remember in turkish a lot of stuff are like this u just know that there is no proper english sentence equals that! specially the “xin ku le” they have the same thing they would also translate it to (thank you) but it’s not really ,also in arabic we say something very similar in meaning of “xin ku le” that cant be translated in english properly (i’m arab)

I was literally just saying this to my husband yesterday about how Netflix translations really don’t capture certain aspects or emotions or even contexts. I am rewatching ‘The Double’ after watching on Viki and Netflix always misses out certain names or they’ll just put the persons name on the translation, when the characters say da ge, or jie jie. 😭
