The Prophet ﷺ said: “Indeed, the thing I fear most for you is minor Shirk.” They asked, “What is minor Shirk, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “It is ar-Riyaʾ (showing off).” Then he said that on the Day of Resurrection, Allah will say: “Go to those for whom you used to show off your deeds in the worldly life and see if you find any reward with them.” — Musnad Ahmad 23636 (Hasan) This should terrify every believer. Because prayer can become Riyaʾ. Charity can become Riyaʾ. Seeking knowledge can become Riyaʾ. Teaching Islam can become Riyaʾ. Even calling people to Allah can become Riyaʾ. Allah repeatedly warns us that there will be people who performed deeds in this life… Only to find them worthless on the Day of Judgement. He says: وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا أَعْمَالُهُمْ كَسَرَابٍ بِقِيعَةٍ يَحْسَبُهُ الظَّمْآنُ مَاءً حَتَّىٰ إِذَا جَاءَهُ لَمْ يَجِدْهُ شَيْئًا وَوَجَدَ اللَّهَ عِنْدَهُ فَوَفَّاهُ حِسَابَهُ ۗ وَاللَّهُ سَرِيعُ الْحِسَابِ

That is what is extreme error." [Surah Ibrahim 14:18] He also says: وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا أَعْمَالُهُمْ كَسَرَابٍ بِقِيعَةٍ يَحْسَبُهُ الظَّمْآنُ مَاءً حَتَّىٰ إِذَا جَاءَهُ لَمْ يَجِدْهُ شَيْئًا وَوَجَدَ اللَّهَ عِنْدَهُ فَوَفَّاهُ حِسَابَهُ ۗ وَاللَّهُ سَرِيعُ الْحِسَابِ But those who disbelieved - their deeds are like a mirage in a lowland which a thirsty one thinks is water until, when he comes to it, he finds it is nothing but finds Allah before Him, and He will pay him in full his due; and Allah is swift in account. [Surah an-Nur 24:39] And He says: وَقَدِمْنَا إِلَىٰ مَا عَمِلُوا مِنْ عَمَلٍ فَجَعَلْنَاهُ هَبَاءً مَنْثُورًا "And We will regard what they have done of deeds and make them as dust dispersed." [Surah al-Furqan 25:23] Every deed should begin with one question: Who am I doing this for? People's praise ends. People's attention fades.
