But here’s what I want you to know—thinking only about the individual actually leaves your individual more exposed, not less. Here’s why: 🧠 Vaccines aren’t 100% for everyone. Some kids don’t respond fully. Some can’t be vaccinated at all—newborns too young for certain shots, kids on chemo, those with immune disorders. These children depend entirely on the people around them. When enough of a community is protected, a virus can’t find its next host. It hits dead end after dead end and fizzles out. That wall of protection is called herd immunity—and it’s the thing standing between your child and an outbreak. 🛡️ The paradox: 🔄 The moment people opt out “just for their own family,” the wall develops gaps. Measles, whooping cough, and other diseases we’d nearly forgotten come roaring back through those gaps. And they don’t check whose parents made which choice—they find the vulnerable, including the fully vaccinated kid whose protection was never perfect. So the individual is never really an island.
