My old r22 runs about 14 hours a day (I have a smart therm and track runtime) when the heat index is about 110

If it’s 110 and humid the system won’t be able to keep up. If it’s 90 outside and can’t keep up then it’s likely undersized if there no issues with the coils

mine runs day and night its 28 years old we set it at 72 but cant keep up so it stays at 85 all day

if you are running fresh air through it, then it will run since it has to temper that outside air. you condenser fan will likely run all day no matter what since it has to discharge all the heat that is being removed by the compressor.
