There is no “typical” South African accent. Our accents depend on what your mother tongue is, which city or province you grew up in etc. hence why it can be so difficult to replicate. You came close to pronouncing certain words correctly though !! 🤣🤍

I'm South African and my ancestor's are German. It's kind of like Australian British with a little bit of Dutch!

South African is difficult because of all the reasons stated by my fellow South Africans, AND because with first language English speaking South Africans, the accent also changes regionally. For instance - people from Durban would say they want “ass in mah waan” (British accent will get you this sound). But a Cape Town person would say “eysss in my wiyn”with much shorter vowel sounds. And then the Afrikaans speakers CAN have very thick accents when speaking English but that also differs regionally. 😏 I have a very anglicized English accent for a South African because I grew up watching bbc and I am well educated and an avid poetry and literature reader.

We have 12 official languages. We therefore have a massive number of accents. It isn't possible to say ”speak English in a South African accent” because a rural Xhosa person will have a vastly different accent to a city Xhosa person, and an English speaker from Johannesburg will sound vastly different than a Cape Tonian or Durbanite. Typically when people want you to copy a South African accent they are referring to an Afrikaans English accent. Afrikaans is a Germanic language, but is not simply “dumbed down” Dutch. It is a language in it's own right. White people sound different to black people, who sound different to coloured people, who sound different to Indan people because English is our second sometimes third, sometimes fourth language. We are a polyglot society and out mother tongue determines our accent. So the short answer here is no, you cannot try the South African accent without more context. Hope this helps 😁

Hey 👋🏻 I'm Egyptian. In my country, people tend to judge someone's English based on how native their accent sounds, and that can have a huge impact on our careers and professional lives. So I think many Egyptians try to sound as native as possible because of how classist our society is.

Great effort 🥰😍As a South African and ESL teacher I know that our speech often has a musical rhythm to it. We stress consonants , especially T, R, D and N. We stress certain important words and our vocabulary is very unique due to having so many languages🇿🇦💚

I always say that we tend to have a "flat" pronounciation 😅 and whats the most outdtanding is the amount of slang words we use and mixing of languages.

for those who are curious: niederländisch -> dutch platt german -> lower german they are close enough 1 of 12 official languages in SA: Afrikaans, an off shoot from Dutch. (personally I have learned Afrikaans, German and Dutch ( and a lil platt Deutsch) pronunciations are different so no help in this case. and yes accents in SA are super diverse.
