It was built during the height of the tuberculosis (TB) epidemic, when Jefferson County had one of the highest TB death rates in the country. The first sanatorium opened on the property in 1910 as a small, two-story building that could care for about 40–50 patients. As the epidemic worsened, a much larger five-story building was constructed and opened in 1926, eventually housing more than 400 patients. At the time, there were no effective antibiotics, so treatment focused on fresh air, rest, nutrition, and sunlight, which is why the building features long open-air porches on every floor. After the discovery and widespread use of the antibiotic streptomycin, tuberculosis cases declined dramatically. Waverly Hills closed as a TB hospital in 1961. It later operated as a geriatric care facility before eventually closing altogether. The property has since been preserved as a historic landmark and is now best known for its tours and paranormal investigations. Today, Waverly Hills is recognized not only for its reputation as one of America’s most haunted locations, but also for its importance in medical history. Thousands of patients were treated there during one of the nation’s deadliest public health crises, making it a significant reminder of how medicine has evolved over the past century.
