In fact the real question is who would care about shaving in this situation?

I don't think this is right, I rewatched it recently and June said she shaved her legs once a month under Rita's supervision and Rita took the razor away immediately after

(imo) I think a lot of the commenters are given the illusion that it's their choice/personal preference but it's 95 percent patriarchy. Sensory issues and enjoyment of the actual process of shaving aside (cuz those are valid af), if we existed in our bodies, in our respective cultures pre-colonialism absent patriarchy, shaving wouldn't be a thought. In fact, we'd probably find ways to emphasize body hair by bleaching or manipulating it to look even more beautiful. That said, we exist in a patriarchal world and it is okay if you like to shave!

I found it!!! episode one season eight! When Fred takes her to the brothel, it says that Rita waits outside the door once a month while she shaves her leg legs!! I knew I had heard it somewhere!!!

I sit on the fence with this question because I can absolutely see how it is a product of the patriarchy but also, I personally really enjoy the ritual of shaving. I like scrubbing down, exfoliating, lathering up, shaving, and then moisturizing. To me, it’s part of self care. I don’t shave my legs or arms in winter but I do shave my armpits because I hate how the hair feels when I get sweaty. For me, it’s about care and the sensory joy.

I would say both! Initially, I would assume it was born out of the wants for men but now I would say most people do it for their personal reasons. Me personally, TMI a trim is better than other options! 😂😂😂

What if a woman naturally had short hair due to genetics?

things can be influenced by culture but still a personal choice! like having long hair as a woman- culturally, that’s what’s expected, but its still each womans choice to cut her hajr or not. you can choose to shave your legs or not, but the expectation to is influenced by culture (and patriarchy)

I think that it is both. I definitely wax certain parts of my body because of sensory issues. However, I have no issues letting other parts. I’ve my body grow out because it doesn’t bother me and I honestly only think about it when it is long enough that I noticed it. Caveat, I am fair complected and have light colored body hair so That may be part of a privilege I don’t consciously think about

for me it's patriarchy. i do not shave my legs religiously (i also have very little visible hair), though I do sometimes. but I remember i completely didn't care about it, until I was TOLD I need to shave. and i have unlearn myself that I don't have to, so my take is shaving is not a natural need.

I would say it’s a bit of both, I think there is a matter of pressure from the patriarchy, but we can choose for ourselves when we recognize that pressure. Like for example I hate leg hair but I don’t mind my armpit hair, which is considered “wrong” or “unclean”, because I choose to ignore the stigma. It’s all about how we react to pressure from others, or in most cases the patriarchy

i think it's a personal preference thing and i also think it's both, i've never felt pressured to shave my legs and i've only ever done it once because it felt really gross, like i could feel my pants touching me without my natural protective barrier so i never did it again, but some women hate how body hair feels on them after shaving for the first time but some feel societal pressure, i think it's a person-to-person situation
