I agree and disagree with you, I will give an example, I was standing next to the net in hockey and scored, I told my coach it was luck I scored, but not really, because in this case I purposely positioned myself next to the net knowing there may be an opening for a goal. Is it luck? yes and no, you can only get lucky if you position yourself correctly in the first place, is it luck one person got a promotion and the other didn’t, when the one who didn’t never asked

I don’t disagree with the general sentiment. Not all work is equal, or quantifiable, especially when people say they work hard. People can work extremely hard, but in all the wrong ways, or with a lower quality of effort. That can be why outcomes are not guaranteed.

Not to be this guy, but I have a similar thing with pro athletes being religious. I prayed every night as a lil kid to be a pro athlete. If I ended up as one by chance I honestly might’ve believed in god too.

No, you’re misunderstanding the meaning of the quote. It’s used in sport to explain that working hard allows you to be in a position to take advantage of luck if it comes. If you don’t work hard enough then no amount of luck will do anything for you. You’re intentionally misrepresenting the quote for content

It's like how the "self-made man" is never self-made. 😂 Like Elon pretends like he worked super hard to get where he is today, but he was born rich. Also, Jeff's parents almost $250k of their life savings and he got lucky, which is how Amazon started. It's survivorship bias at its finest combined with a completely oblivious attitude towards their privilege.

I usually fully agree, but “making” your own luck is exposing yourself to tons of opportunities. As many as you can. But the way people use it, they act like it wasn’t that. So i can see why you get mad, but in my understanding it’s not like that
