I get false memories often from my own logical dreams. the only way I prove it wrong is by recalling the date... if I can't it's fake, even if I'm super sure it's real. there's prob some memories I think are fake that are real. I also ask people

Hey so I actually wouldn’t disbelieve that you’re remembering correctly and the rest of the family has forgotten. There’s an episode of the Podcast Heavyweight (#16 Rob) where Rob is convinced he broke his arm as a kid and no one else in the family remembers it so Rob believes it must be a false memory. But the hosts go digging and find archived hospital records and Rob did break his arm even though no one else remembers it happening!

technically they’re not fully false memories, they’re a conglomeration of things you have actually experienced, just arranged in a combination they never existed in in the real world. But our personal experiences feel real to us, and we can respect that our realities will conflict. it’s always good to remember that the brain is not infallible.

I’ve had this memory forever that I logically knew it had to be 100% false. It’s so vivid, I distinctly remember it but I know it could never have happened, so it’s always been a weird thing in the back of my brain. Learned a few months ago, on this app, that it was a late 80s/early 90s commercial that I somehow incorporated as something happening in my actual life. Mystery solved. But seeing the commercial again, my vivid memory was pretty accurate- it just never happened to me. Wild.

Did you spend a lot of time in that room? I know sometimes our brains can attach to things when everything else was scary, so it could’ve just been that you spent a lot of time in there and your brain decided it was your room

I have a vivid memory of my parents stopping at an old run down motel once looking to see if they could stay for a while for some reason I didn’t know when I was in preschool. Parents swore it never happened, and it baffles me.

I have thought about this a lot growing up.. my mom and my older sister recall completely different things about my sister's childhood. Listening to them, I realized that everyone lives in a different reality and creates it for themselves in a way. Between memories changing every time they are revisited, differing experiences of the same events, and the pure fantasies that are unlikely to be real at all... Sometimes I try to identify which of my memories are false and in what ways.. probably the ones that were told to me (remember when you..), probably the ones I recall often, probably the ones with emotion attached to bias the memory, and probably the memories that help me explain myself to myself, like getting spanked, my mom says that NEVER happened, she is so sure - maybe it didn't, maybe it is just an easy way to explain parts of myself.
