This is actually a huge issue in economics/sociology. A lot of middle class children are struggling to recreate the life they had growing up

American capitalism thrives off the middle class probably the biggest prey. You have a better chance of achieving the “American Dream” growing up poor or wealthy

We used to call it ‘hood rich’ the bape hoodie, supreme, off white, was all I wanted at 16 bc I didn’t grow up wealthy so it was stuff. I’m 25 now, but my mom was so great with forcing me saving and now those material things don’t matter as much. Of course I have my moments, but the eye is always on the prize

I like this take, to sum it up you basically saying a lot of middle class children / people live in a false reality because of what’s right in front of them. Thinking they have more until reality hits.

It’s dangerous bc ppl look at you when you have restraint and say you’re “settling.” Whole time they think going to extremes for what you want is acceptable.

Well said, that’s why a lot of the middle class are in debt/more susceptible to debt.

I always tell my man who grew up middle class, that one of the weird benefits of growing up poor is that I don’t have the itch to buy the newest thing 24/7. Like I’m not going to get the newest iPhone every single year, and for the most part I use most things until I can’t

Inflation and the wealth gap increase has also extremely exacerbated this, coming up 6 figures meant single family home, white picket fense, nice cars and yearly vacays. Now especially in and around top 10-20 cities you’re doing slightly better than making it by or maybe doing well but living very humbly with the same money. Goal post keeps moving.

Growing up in a middle class household that transitioned to upper middle class by high school this was spot on. Duplicating my Mother’s success has been an uphill battle. My Mother was able to obtain her success without a college degree, she had a strong will to climb the ladder at the company she started with at age 23. I think a lot of people are missing that the qualifications to obtain equal success to our parents changed significantly by the time we graduated ( I’m a millennial) . I think the materialism comes into play because it’s a coping mechanism for not being able to secure the lifestyle most thought they would have.
