I'm Zambian. Most of us didn't know that the tournament was happening until last week AFTER the World cup ended. Our team has qualified and we didn't know. Usually there are advertisements and programs about it and this year there were just none. It feels like it was meant to be an afterthought.

Maybe instead of posting empty seats with a 💔, ask why WAFCON gets a fraction of the promotion, coverage and investment that other major tournaments receive. You can’t keep African women’s football invisible and then use the lack of visibility as proof that nobody cares. ESPN is part of that media ecosystem too. Promote the tournament. Build the audience. Then talk to us about attendance. And the racial double standard in how African sport gets framed deserves a serious conversation. 🥴

DONT even get me started on the match commentator’s I literally have nothing to say Im beyond disgusted. The South Africa vs Tanzania match was a hard watch, it was like the commentator was bored and did not even want to be there. There was a point where he actually STOPPED calling them by their names and just called them by their numbers ( I guarantee you he did not “forget” their names). Women’s sports is not taken seriously it’s infuriating. All the brands are so quiet but they do not exclude women from purchasing their products, their BIGGEST supporters, how ironic.

Also this is SO disingenuous. They put all the fans on the same side as the cameras shoot from. When they cut to crowd shots there are actually a decent number of people at the games, you just don’t see ANY of them in the shots of play on the field

this is also why intersectionality is such an important thing for people to understand and speak out on. we see how players of color on men’s teams are treated and we see how white women players and teams are treated and now these women and teams get the worst of both sides of it bc they’re woc. genuinely vile
