As a licensed esthetician, the only thing that I seriously remember learning in school was how to properly mix disinfectant other than that I learned my craft from actually being on the and servicing my clients. These hours are such a joke

Ohio- 1500 for standard cos license, 1800 for advanced practice (or one year full time in the salon with standard license). The advanced license is only needed if you plan to become an instructor. Ohio does have a breakdown of how many hours for each subject for the schools. I believe all professional licenses should have a national test (held by federal standards). That way we can legally work in any state without the need for more hours or additional testing. Things won’t change until states change the hour requirement. I was fortunate to take cos in high school. I’ve also taught high school as well as an adult program, and it’s the exact same curriculum, but high school is around 1k and the adult program is around 18k.

we have way more criteria to cover and everything is mandatory hands on in Cali I dunno about other states but we literally learn everything on the floor we even have completely different books like my school showed us our compared to other states plus we spend half that on biology and learning how the chemicals react with the body that's literally all our book work is everything else is hands on we don't even have a class on the books other than Fridays and Mondays and even Mondays 90% of the day is on the floor taking clients plus if you plan to specialize you for the most part only have clients and we hafta take exams to make sure we're even allowed to graduate if we don't meet criteria to work immediately than we get dropped even if all our hours are completed

Maybe it’s different now, but when I got my license (11 years ago) you couldn’t switch to a state with higher hours and not make it up at a school unless you had been behind the chair for 2+ years already.

I went to cosmetology school in Arizona in 2011 and it was 1600 hours but I think now it’s the 1600 hours for learning everything and 1000 hours for just hair.

I went to school for 2000 hours for my cosmo/barber 😆 but I've never had any issue getting licensed in any other state because of this lol
