@outdoorwiseliving: Before your next hike, ask yourself these 5 questions: It takes less than 30 seconds, and it could save you (or your hiking partners’) life. Do I have enough water for the entire hike back, not just the hike up? Do I know what time I’ll be back at my car? What will the temperature be at my hottest point on the trail, not just at the trailhead? If I had to spend an unexpected night outside, what would I wish I’d packed? If weather conditions got worse from this point forward, would I still choose to continue? Every summer we see the same pattern with extreme heat and changing weather: people pushing farther than they should. Multiple recent tragedies, including heat-related deaths in the Grand Canyon and a devastating flash flood that claimed the lives of an entire family while hiking in Utah, are heartbreaking reminders that nature doesn’t care how experienced we are. Share this with your favorite hiking partner before your next trail day; and use this video’s three check rule while you’re on the trail to help keep you safe.

I went hiking in the French Alps with my aunt a few years ago. she didnt want to turn around when I alerted her that half our time had passed (needed to get back for the last lift down). she insisted we keep going. we missed the lift by TWO HOURS. the story of how we managed to get back that night (though many hours late) is wild.
