My parents friends were bragging about how their home they bought for $65k, 30 years ago just sold for $1.3 million. Then they told me that I should buy a starter home like they did… They said I was rude when I told them I can’t because their generation is selling starter homes for $1.3 million.

I got a house deposit because I saved 15k. then my dad died and I got 10k. and my partner had someone drive into her car and she got 30k. so we had a 50k deposit because of random circumstances... including death.

My grandmother cant understand why we are struggling to save for a house so I mentioned our rent is $630 a week and she said ‘oh well I would never pay that much for renting!’ Well nanna we dont have a choice..? This is the cheapest you can get a 3 bedroom house 🫠

If we were to buy our house today it would be over $1M. To save a 10% deposit it would take us 40 months of saving $2000 a month. Most households don’t have that spare even when on good money and a tight budget

Yup. My parents' family home was $26k in 1976. Adjusted that's around $160k today. The cheapest listing in my *entire county* is $285k for a legally condemned foreclosure.

Every single time I talk to my dad on the phone he berates me for spending money and not saving up for a cash down. He thinks I can miraculously save up enough to buy a place in a year. A cash down for a decent place (not full of mold) is around 40-50k in my area. I make 52k a year and have bills and rent to pay. It’s not my 5$ coffee once a week that’s ruining me financially!

My Nan bought her house for $14,000. They recently sold it before it even hit the market to a developer for just over 2mil. They had the place for 50 years.

laughing over here, smarter with my money? girl i dont eat out, I dont buy no Starbucks, I only use 1 tank of gas a month to save as much as I can. and I got 60k to put down on a house right now and I still cant afford one
