my mother worked at a major university for years and often said that when an institution starts making a big fuss over dress codes and other inconsequential things, you can count on the fact that the wheels are falling off somewhere else within that institution.

My son is a chef. I buy him simple do rags to cover his hair so it doesn’t get damaged. I don’t see how that makes him less professional (for context, he is a handsome, dark skinned black man with long well-kept dress- I’m lucky enough to be his adopted mom). He is incredibly talented, and not having to worry about his hair at work gives him more time to shine!!!

As someone who was taught by nuns, and who rarely leaves home without a bandana holding my hair down and back (I overheat easily, and the bandana helps sweat wick instead of dripping in my eyes), this is nonsense. Most dress codes, especially in college, are nonsense, but policing black hair is so 1900s. Ew.

"Professionalism" is a human construct. We made it up. It doesn't matter. It doesn't have any impact on anyone's ability to do their job (safety gear notwithstanding, obviously). Humans just made up all these damn rules, and we keep making ourselves more and more miserable! Also... When I was just a wee white girl in college, I can't count how many times I wore a baseball cap to class because I just wanted to get up and go to class without spending a ton of time getting ready. Let college kids be comfy! Damn!

I'd like to add.. I have a six figure healthcare career. I didn't wear pajamas to class or bonnets, but I definitely went in comfortable clothing like sweatpants or athletic pants and jeans, a skull cap if I didn't have time to do my hair, t-shirts and comfy shoes- mainly flipflops. when I got to the end of school and went on clinical rotations, we had a dress code, Khakis and polo shirts. I despised the uniform but I wore it. Now I dress appropriately at work with no issues. dress codes have their time and place but a closer classroom where you're just sitting and listening to a professor, attire isn't really a big deal. I've always felt that most dress codes discriminate against blacks specifically. remember a few years ago when they said box braids and afrocentric hairstyles were "unprofessional"? that's what this feels like. Also, I got straight A's, top of both my HS and college classes (predominantly white schools), full academic scholarship to college, and I was still treated like a DEI hire on every job. The problem isn't about how we dress.

The high school principal where both of girls graduated from, said he believes students learn better when they are comfortable. He allowed them to wear whatever they wanted as long as nothing was hanging out and didn't advertise drugs or alcohol. Those were his only rules for the dress code. The school board came up with some ridiculous dress code rules, he didn't believe in most of the dress codes. He had more students graduate then the other high schools. So this tells me you and him both are right.
