One is willing(crazy enough) to take a leap of faith, face the darkness. Batman. The other is so broken and far gone that he doesn’t believe he can be saved from the darkness. He knows on some level he cannot make the leap and if he tried it would end worse than if he never tried. Batman couldn’t lead the joker to the light. He is so far gone, hence the irrational belief that the light would support his weight, but the irrational fear that it would be taken from underneath him. It’s a sad joke on how crazy they both are, but one’s beyond redemption.

No way this many people didn't understand the joke? Batmans the one with the flashlight. Joker is the one that hasn't walked across. Joker is focused on the fact Batman would turn the light off causing him to fall. Batman believes joker can walk on the flashlights BEAM OF LIGHT. Two crazy people seeing extremely unrealistic things from different points of view.

I always considered the story as the batman and the joker. The batman has the strength to perform the leap, and wants the joker to cross on the hope he gives him. But the joker is so far gone that he doesn't question the light itself, he questions Batman. Batman is foolish because he believes the light is enough, the joker is foolish cuz he doesn't question the method but the intent. In the end, the story can be interpreted as true because not long after this, it is down to the audience to determine if Batman finally kills the joker. If you decide he does, the joker is right, and batman turns off the light that will save him.

i always thought that batman was just giving the joker what he wanted, a laugh from the always stoic batman before Bruce finally killed him. Not sure if this is true but to me it is.

I think batman laughed because it was the first time the joker made an actual joke that didn't include hurting anyone, and was proud of it. It was the first time since his accident he tried to be a comedian. Batman saw this and since he actually cares for his enemies, laughed with the joker.

Joker just sitting there, listening quietly, as Batman pleaded with him to let him help. Heartbreaking when Joker ultimately says no. I have the comic this movie is based on and knew how it ended, but a small part of me hoped they'd have Joker accept Batman's offer in the end.
