Once you are shrouded, the people will gather around you and look at your face one last time. They will recognise you by the features they once knew, the smile they once saw, the eyes they once looked into, the face that carried your identity throughout your whole life. But now, that face is motionless. The soul has returned back to Allah. Then they will walk away from you. They will leave the cemetery, return to their homes, return to their families, return to their food, their businesses, their phones, and their lives. And deep inside themselves, many will think: “Alhamdulillah, I am still alive. I still have time. I am not the one in the shroud today.” That is the greatest lesson at a funeral. The deceased can no longer return to pray one more prayer, make one more sajdah, ask for forgiveness one more time, give one more charity, or repent from one more sin. But you can. As long as your soul is still in your body, the door of repentance is still open. As long as you are breathing, Allah is still giving you a chance to change, to become better, to soften your heart, and to return back to Him. Allah says in the Qur’an: “And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, so that you may succeed.” — Surah An-Nur 24:31 So do not wait for your face to be the one people look at in silence.
