I used to avoid painting flowers whenever I could. Every time I looked at one, all I could see were petals. Hundreds of little shapes all competing for my attention. It felt overwhelming, and I never knew where to start. What finally changed everything was learning to squint. As soon as I squinted my eyes, all those little details melted away. Instead of seeing a hundred petals, I saw one simple light shape and one simple shadow shape. That gave me something I could actually paint. From there, the details became so much easier because they had a solid foundation to sit on. Now I actually love painting flowers because they're one of the best subjects for practicing how to see form instead of getting distracted by details. It's funny how often the thing that feels the most complicated becomes one of your favorite things once you learn how to look at it differently.
