History of Murule Paramount Chief Aba Abdinoor Gessey (1959) Aba Abdinoor Gessey was a respected traditional leader of the Murule community in Rhamu, located in Mandera County, Kenya, during the late colonial period. In 1959, while Kenya was still under British colonial rule, he served as a Paramount Chief, a position recognized by the colonial administration to oversee local governance, maintain order, and represent the interests of his people. As Paramount Chief, Aba Abdinoor Gessey played an important role in mediating conflicts, guiding customary law, and ensuring cooperation between the Murule community and the colonial government. During this period, chiefs were responsible for maintaining security, collecting taxes, organizing local administration, and helping implement colonial policies in northern Kenya, which was then part of the Northern Frontier District (NFD). Rhamu, a strategic settlement near the Kenya–Somalia border, was an important administrative and trading center. Leaders like Aba Abdinoor Gessey were key figures in maintaining stability among pastoral communities who lived across the borderlands. His leadership helped strengthen traditional authority while navigating the political changes that were beginning to shape the region as Kenya moved toward independence in the early 1960s. Among the Murule people, Aba Abdinoor Gessey is remembered as a wise elder and a unifying leader who served his community during a complex historical period. His role reflects the broader system of indirect rule used by the British, where local chiefs were empowered to administer their communities while preserving elements of traditional governance.
