Selenium is a trace mineral, but it plays a disproportionately important role in thyroid physiology. Your thyroid contains one of the highest concentrations of selenium per gram of tissue in the body. One of its key roles is supporting the enzymes involved in converting T4 into the more active thyroid hormone T3. But there’s another reason I think selenium is particularly interesting in Hashimoto’s. Producing thyroid hormones creates oxidative stress inside the thyroid gland. Selenium is required for important antioxidant enzymes, including glutathione peroxidases, which help protect thyroid tissue from oxidative damage. Research has also found that selenium supplementation may reduce thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb) in some people with Hashimoto’s — although the evidence isn’t consistent enough to say everyone with Hashimoto’s should automatically supplement. And this part matters: more selenium is not better. Selenium has a relatively narrow therapeutic window, so I don’t recommend taking high doses indefinitely without considering your diet, existing supplements and individual thyroid picture. The selenium I’m holding in this video is Herbs of Gold Selenium MAX, which is available through Nourishing Apothecary. If you’re dealing with Hashimoto’s, hypothyroidism or thyroid symptoms and want more personalised support, Toni is our naturopath who focuses on thyroid, women’s hormones, weight and metabolic health. You can book a FREE Discovery Call with Toni through our website. Not sure whether Toni or another practitioner is the right fit for you? Comment the word CLINIC below and we’ll send you our Find the Right Practitioner form. Once you complete it, one of our naturopaths will contact you and help match you with the practitioner best suited to your health goals. #hashimotos #hashimotosthyroiditis #thyroidhealth #hypothyroidism #selenium
