In September 2004, at the height of the Iraq War, 50 Cent and G-Unit members Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo, and DJ Whoo Kid flew into Camp Anaconda near Balad, Iraq, to perform for US troops. It was one of the largest and most heavily targeted American bases in the country. Soldiers stationed there had given it a nickname: Mortaritaville. Because it absorbed mortar and rocket attacks almost every single day. The base had already been hit by a missile before 50 Cent’s plane touched down. A September 2004 CENTCOM press release confirmed that a mortar attack on the base that month killed two soldiers and injured sixteen others. This was the environment he was walking into. Not a concert venue. An active combat zone. On the flight in, a military officer reportedly told him straight: “Not gonna bullshit you. You could die today.” 50 didn’t hesitate. He had already been shot nine times on the streets of Queens in 2000 and survived. A mortar threat wasn’t enough to make him turn around. He performed on a makeshift stage in the middle of the base while mortar fire continued in the surrounding area. He opened with What Up Gangsta. Soldiers fired celebratory rounds into the air. For a few hours, a base that lived under constant threat of death got to forget where they were. But what changed 50 Cent wasn’t the performance. It was what happened afterward. Soldiers approached him and showed him letters they had written to their families. Letters meant to be delivered in case they didn’t make it home. These weren’t props. They were real goodbye letters written by people in their twenties who had accepted they might not survive the week. 50 later said that moment stuck with him permanently. He had grown up in Southside Jamaica, Queens, survived being shot nine times at point-blank range, and built a career rapping about survival. But seeing young soldiers carrying their own death letters put everything into a different perspective. #military #50cent #fyp #veteran #iraq
