Reposted from @el.i.az King Leopold II of Belgium is infamously known for orchestrating one of the most brutal and deadly colonial regimes in history during his personal rule over the Congo Free State in Africa between 1885 and 1908. What happened under his rule is often described as a genocide or crimes against humanity, though it wasn’t legally labeled as such at the time. Under Leopold’s rule, the Congo was turned into a brutal labor camp to extract rubber and ivory: Villages that didn’t meet quotas were punished violently. Soldiers of the Force Publique, Leopold’s private army, routinely: • Cut off the hands of men, women, and children to terrorize and enforce rubber quotas. • Burned villages, executed resisters, and used mass hostage-taking. • Raped and enslaved women and children.
