It’s so hard but so important to help them understand they’ve been scammed. My participant had been talking to this woman online for years and she lives in Florida. My participant was having health troubles and spending a lot of time in hospital and appointments and this person sent her a blanket she had made. Last year after recovering from a surgery she had planned a trip to Florida with her husband. Whenever discussing it with this woman she was all for her coming and catching up but the closer the trip came the more stand offish she was being. When my participant landed in Florida and told the woman she had arrived she received a message basically laughing at her that she believed this was a real friend and couldn’t believe she had travelled all that way. Naturally my participant was devastated, because this person would be there for her online when she was the most vulnerable and lonely. She felt humiliated. When she told me after returning from her holiday I did my own search and found that the person she was talking to was a man pretending to be this woman that he was apparently friends with. As soon as she was back in Australia they messaged my participant again and I was like nope no way, it was causing so much hurt and stress and I helped her block the account so she can move on after learning a hard lesson.
