I wanted to highlight here again how additives are sneaked into packaged foods that you may not realise. It would be reasonable to assume that tinned peas contained just peas and water and perhaps some salt.. but no that’s not the case. Whether it’s tinned mushy peas, tinned marrowfat peas or tinned processed peas, they all contain added sugar, salt, and colours to improve the taste and the appearance of the peas. And sometimes added flavouring too! And the no added sugar option uses artificial sweetener saccharin to replace the sugar... ingredients which are completely unnecessary to have in peas I feel. If you want to buy ready made mushy peas, the frozen mushy peas are a better option - they contain 99% rehydrated peas and 1% stabiliser without the added sugars, salt and colours. My favourite option though is to just go for frozen Petit Pois. They contain 100% petits pois with nothing added and are much sweeter than garden peas so will give you the sweetness without adding sugar. They are also picked and frozen at peak freshness which means they retain their natural sweetness, and are high in fibre and nutrients like vitamins C and K, and minerals like iron and magnesium. Just mash them after cooking with butter and salt and they’ll taste so much better 👌 So remember - for lots of products the freezer aisle really is your friend! Did you know this about tinned peas? I’d love to know in the comments! ❤️ #nutrition #ultraprocessedfood #tinnedpeas #cleverswaps #foodlabels
