to be honest, I think that what Kai did in the first prison world was fully valid. He'd been psychologically traumatized as a kid by being a siphoner. No psychical touch, not being able to do any magic and also knowing that he'd one day just die for the merge is probably why he did what he did against the coven. To gain power. The Gemini coven was such a toxic coven and they could've easily made sure that Kai didn't do what he did. Then he got locked up for 18 years cause they couldn't find a way to actually live with him. It's honestly dehumanizing. He was locked up for 18 years (they wanted to put him there for eternity obviously) alone so obviously when he found the chance to escape, he took it. Bonnie tried to harm Kai as much as he harmed her back and his intention was never to kill her, while her intention was that. Kai broke bonnie, not by harming her psychically, but by breaking her hope and leaving her stranded. All alone, with no one and when he got out and then later merged with Luke, he was actually psychologically on the way to get better but Damon later put Bonnie in that situation to work with Kai and Bonnie wanted revenge (obviously. She's allowed to feel that) and made an impulsive decision. Bonnie made Kai's "truama/old self" return in a way by leaving him in the 1903 world.
