Ansar 1 was established in southern Lebanon after Israel’s 1982 invasion and held thousands of Palestinian and Lebanese detainees behind barbed wire under military guard. Ansar 2, also known as Katiba, was opened in Gaza and became notorious for mass arrests, beatings, harsh conditions and the detention of many young Palestinians. During the First Intifada, Israel also opened Ansar 3 at Ketziot in the Negev, where thousands were held in tents, many under administrative detention without charge or trial. These were not ordinary prisons for convicted criminals…they were part of a wider system used to detain and control a population living under occupation.
