Utmankhel vs. Utmanzai Two Different Pashtun Tribes Many people confuse Utmankhel with Utmanzai, but they have different origins. Utmankhel belong to the Karlani branch of the Pashtuns. Their genealogy traces from Karlani → Kaky → Burhan → Utman, and the descendants of this Utman became known as the Utmankhel tribe. Utman and Usman (ancestor of the Afridis) were maternal brothers, while the Khattak and Zadran tribes are their paternal relatives. Utmanzai, on the other hand, belong to the Sarbani branch. They descend from Mandan, where Mano had two sons, Usman and Utman. The descendants of this Utman became known as the Utmanzai. According to Pashtun historical traditions, the Utmankhel tribe remained associated with the Karlani Pashtuns until the migration of the Khashy tribal group from Kandahar toward Kabul. During this migration, the Utmankhel chose to accompany the Sarbani Khashy tribe. After many generations, when the Khashy tribes ancestors of the Yousafzai reached the Peshawar region, they encountered the powerful Dilazak tribe. As conflicts with the Dilazaks intensified, the Khashy tribes united under the leadership of the Yousafzai elders. The Utmankhel played a courageous role in these wars, fighting alongside the Khashy tribes and helping secure victories that eventually enabled the Yousafzai to expand into and conquer Swat.
