What is so crazy about that case, is that they actually went to go seek help from the rangers. The survivors of the Porvenir Massacre were mothers, and some were pregnant, left to bury the men in their families. And even before the period History called “La Matanza” Chipita Rodríguez was hanged on a false conviction. That decades later the state admitted to not having enough evidence for the hanging. In Goliad, killers posed for postcards beside the people they lynched. This was not only violence, it was humiliation, meant to remind us that no Mexican body was ever safe. If your roots trace back to South Texas or the Rio Grande Valley, take a step back for a minute. Ask your abuelos what they remember. Ask what land belonged to your family before it didn't. So many of these stories only survived through corridos, because no newspaper would print them. But our people did document then, just like we are doing with ICE now. Remember that your family's silence was never forgetting, it was survival. Many people in our communities as well are simply right to survive. Do not take my word for it. Please go research verify it yourself. The 1919 Canales Investigation transcripts are public record, digitized through the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. Refusing to Forget has mapped every massacre site and historical marker by county. This history is documented, it was just never taught. Once you know, you carry the responsibility to share it.
