SSI and SSDI Need a huge increase. welfare based or not! and the marriage penalty needs to go away! people in the comments arguing well they worked for it. Or saying they abuse the system. No it's extremely hard to even get it and multiple Doctors and a judge all have to agree you need it.

A lot of you in the comments are ignoring the fact that a good portion of people on SSI are children and the fact that the representative payee which is usually the custodial parent can't have more than $2000 in the bank forces them to live in poverty if their care is such that the parent can't work. And if the parent has a full time job where they make over that amount the child gets kicked off and has to reapply to restart benefits later on down the line if needed. SSI is designed to keep you trapped in poverty just like every other program that provides any kind of assistance. People think that people on SSI are out here living some lavish life but the truth is they're trapped in poverty struggling just to survive to the next day and in many cases stuck living with abusive family members, partners or friends or low income housing with terrible living conditions.

SSI and SSDI are different. SSI is welfare. SSDI is disability and does not have asset limits.

SSi is not SSD. SSi is welfare and it should have asset restrictions. SSD people don't have asset restrictions because we earned that money.

not just the asset limit, eliminate the penalties for living with family or friends to help lower or eliminate rent and food costs. its bull shit that ssi recipients have to live below standards of poverty because the system hasn't been updated in 50 years. feels like punishment for wanting to live. sorry I was diagnosed with cancer and have health issues and became disabled, my bad.

or, increase the asset limit. The current limit makes it impossible for someone to save for things like a better used vehicle, major home repairs (yes, some disabled own homes!), or to save for any accommodations that they have to pay out of of pocket.

Then we need to change the wait time for people on SSDI for Medicare to immediately get coverage not wait 2yrs. We pay each month for our health insurance from our checks. We DONT get Medicaid for free we have to pay.
