As someone who lives in Japan for 36 years now, my number one tip is to have all your important documents, including bank documents all together in a place near the door, in a waterproof and fireproof container. And phone chargers, normal and AA battery operated ones. If you can have all the other things, great, but those are the non-optional stuff to do, specially for foreigners.

I’m in Kumamoto too and I want to add if you have small children, make sure you have a disaster bag for them too. For infants, daiso and many drug stores have formula in cubes that are intended to be put in a disaster bag. I’m currently pregnant and as soon as my husband and I move to our new house in two weeks (assuming it passes inspection…) I’m putting together a disaster bag with infant things

Yeah, I live in Kumamoto and everything in my house was literally on the floor. I’ve literally spent all day just going through picking up stuff trying to figure out what’s broken and what’s salvageable

If you have pets, make sure you also are aware of animal friendly shelters near you and be sure things like water bowls and food is prepared in case of a disaster. And be sure you either know someone in your neighborhood or have a way to get home if the disaster occurs. Most cities or wards will have a pet friendly shelter list available online.

Great tips about the apps, thank you! A disaster preparedness bag isn’t a feasible thing for a short term visitor, do you have any suggestions for being prepared for earthquakes as a tourist? I’m gonna be traveling to Kyushu in a few months, so I just want to make sure I’ve got all my bases covered on ways to be prepared for disasters (I live in a place where my biggest concern is blizzards when it comes to natural disasters)

Great tips! You can check nhk news in your phones browser app to get it translated. At least on iPhone, Safari and Chrome both translate

I've yet to hear anything negative about NHK World in terms of anything so thanks. I'll keep that in mind.
