A neighbor of mine died and wasn’t found for a week or so in summer. I had been smelling a horrible smell for a couple days and assumed it was something in the dumpster near my window. It was not. You never, ever forget that smell.

smells awful.....I had a person that lived 2doors dwn from my apt..and I smelled him all day...I called the leasing office... then I called the cops the man was dead exploded on he's bathroom floor....insects where covering he's window....the cops looked at me like I was crazy.....smh

when i went to the ME office and we toured the decomp morgue she described it as rotting meat and smelly pond water with a slight sweetness and i feel like that was pretty accurate

The smell is a mixture of like rotting fruit (hence the sweet), mixed with a dead animal and old blood. Idk but if I smelled it again, I would definitely know 😢

I worked for a Restoration company in so cal and there were time we had to do “bio” jobs. One call we got was for a woman who was dead for some time. Upon arrival to her apartment, there was already a coroners tag at the front door. I had to suit up , mask up and wear all PPE. As soon as I got to the front door I could smell it. That smell never leaves your brain and you remember it forever. Long story short, this lady died in her apartment and was in Orange County in her apartment for 3-4 weeks before anyone found her…. This was during the summer as well so it was really bad. I just remember dry heaving non stop even after leaving the apartment.

It's crazy how your nose & brain connect that distinctive smell as d3ath automatically.I was going on a week vacation. I washed my clothes in the building's laundry room & I smelled it & automatically knew it was the smell of d3ath (even though i never smelled it before).But I thought it was a animal that got stuck in the wall. When I came back from.vacation turned out it was my poor neighbor that's above the laundry room that had passed away weeks prior.

Couple years ago my neighbor passed away in his apartment, he lived alone and no one knew! I started smelling it in my apartment and thought an animal died in the vents. Unfortunately he was dead for around 2 weeks 😞
