Because we struggle to understand the basics, we mark the very day the British Parliament passed the Slavery Abolition Act 1833, which stated that, on August 1, 1838, the enslavement of Africans would finally end in the British-controlled Caribbean and parts of South America. For the formerly enslaved African population, it became the day they marked the moment their enslavers finally freed them. It's like going to prison for a crime you didn't commit, only for the criminal justice system to admit you were wrongly convicted and tell you that you will be released on August 1. Would you celebrate that date? We have so many other dates on which we could call for reparations, like the start of the Haitian Revolution on August 14th, 1791, yet we choose the date given to us by our enslavers. It's just who we are, our minds are still chained to our enslavers.
